Fugitive crashes while trying to evade police

A short chase involving a man wanted by Oklahoma authorities ended with a wreck that injured him and two others Tuesday afternoon.

Officers with the Dallas police fugitive unit were trying to apprehend Leonard Stephenson, 25, at a train station when the chase began shortly after 3 p.m., authorities said.

Stephenson was in a truck and pulled a weapon when officers confronted him, said Sgt. Gil Cerda, a Dallas police spokesman. Stephenson sped away, almost striking one of the officers, Cerda said.

During the chase, the truck struck and bounced off a sport utility vehicle and overturned, Cerda said. The SUV's driver and passenger and Stephenson were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Cerda said.

Stephenson was being sought by authorities in Atoka County, Okla., on five felony and six misdemeanor warrants that included armed robbery and parole violation, officials said.

Police found methamphetamine in the truck Stephenson was driving but did not find a weapon. Officers saw him throw out several items during the chase, Cerda said.
